It has a long running and notorious rivalry with the Spain’s other famous clubs, such as Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao. The rivalry started from the contrary views of the two clubs during the Spanish Civil War. The Madrid based club was a representative for Castillian Spanish, the Spanish state of Castille, as General Franco representing fascism himself supported them.

The rivalry goes intense, as Barcelona is the capital of independent area of Catalonia. Franco banned the Catalan flag and language during those times. Hence, the football club became the only outlet for Catalan nationalism. In 1941, Barca were said to lose a match to Madrid on purpose. They went on to let Real Madrid win the game 11-1, and the goalkeeper of Barcelona was banned for lifetime.

In 1973, Barcelona signed the Dutch Football legend Johan Cruyff for an amount equivalent to under £1 million. His playing style was fast and superb, fans loved him, and he helped FC Barcelona to beat Real Madrid 5-0 in their own stadium, winning the football league. At that time club had more than 70,000 members and was the most powerful club.

Barcelona won the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 league championships and topped their achievement with 2005-2006 Champions League. Most of the club players are under contract until 2010. During the 2006-2007 season, FC Barcelona was the second richest club in the world, an estimated revenue of €290.1 million.
