Barcelona and the Montjuic

The Montjuïc is a hill in the southwest of the city Barcelona, it used to be a fortress, a marking point over the city and the harbour. From a lot of points in the city and especially from the tall buildings you can see this hill. The hill is situated between the city and the sea. About the origin of the name Montjuic is no security, it is possible that it comes from the Catalan expression: ”Hill of the Jews” but more presumable is the Latin: “Hill of Jupiter”, the is hill is one of the green lungs of Barcelona. The other hill around the city is the Tibidabo, that makes Barcelona surrounded by hills who give the city the character: “Pearl of the Mediterranean”.

In 1929 the World exhibition was held on the Montjuic and that was the first time there was something build on the hill. In 1992 the Montjuic was the homebase for the Summer Olympics, the hill got a Olympic stadium, a Olympisch swimmingpool, a big athletic track and the Poble Espanol. Poble Espanol is a collection copied characteristics buildings from whole Spain and where you can find a lot of bars and restaurants. For the rest there is a theatre, a concertbuilding, a greek theatre, magical fontains, the museum Juan Mirò, the exposicionhal CaixaFòrum, the museum Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, the botanic gardens with a unique collection cactusses: Jardìn Botanico de Barcelona and the Jardìn Botanico de Barcelona specialised in Mediterean flora.

On the upper part of the Montjuic there was an amusement park operating from 1966 but now it became an area of leisure facilities, favouring the existence of the natural landscape. Miramar is the name of the esplanade situated like an observation platform overlooking the harbour. In the gardens of this esplanade we can see some very old trees with impressive shaped trunks. Beneath Miramar you find one of the most famous cactus gardens in Europa. Here you can find plant species from Kenya, Ethiopia and Mexico.

The museums on the Montjuic are significant. The museums located on the Montjuic are: The museum of Popular Arts and Industries, the museum of Art of Catalonia, the Ethnological Museum, The Archaeological museum and The Miro foundation which build by Josep Lluis Sert. The building has subsequently been enlarged and it is a permanent collection of works by Joan Mirò and other itinerant exhibitions. One of the great attractions of the Foundation is the Mercury Fountain, made for the Pavilion of the Spanish Republic in 1937.

The sculptures on the Montjuic are in the zone of the former amusement park. There are four sculptures which are dedicated to popular figures: Carmen Amaya made by Josep Cañas, Joaquim Blume and Carlie Rivel are made by Ros Sabater. And the sculpture of Charlie Chaplin is made by Nùria Tortras.

The castle on the Montjuic is an old watchtower build in 1679. The road up to the castle shows you a winged victory sculpture on a pedestal, which commemorates the aviator Juan Duràn. The castle is enlarged by the engineer Juan Manuel Cermeño . Impressing features are the parade ground, the well and the bastions named San Carlos and Santa Amàlia in honour of King Carlos and his wife. Walking from the castle to the monument to the aviator you find a path which leads to the gardens dedicated to another priest: Father ‘Cinto’ Verdaguer. Around are the beautiful Verdaguer-gardens.

The Olympic swimmingpool is also located on the Montjuic, it is designed by Antoni de Moragas and built in 1992. The construction signified the disappearance of the Trobada fountain, one the historic fountains of the 19th century which was inside a bar. Close the the swimmingpool there is the Forest school, which was the first large municipal school. At the entrance Josep Llimona installed a sculptural group called: Love of Childhood. In the square beside the Forest School the city council installed a garden of modern sculptures representing the various tendencies of the 20th century.

Font Màgica Montjuïc, in front of the Montjuic are stairs from the Palau Nacional. Along these stairs are amazing fountains and halfway are the Font Màgica. The magic fountains, during the day they are not special but when the sun goes down the fountain comes to live.

And this are still not all the attractions of the Montjuic, it is definitely worth visiting. As the city Barcelona. Barcelona is the capital of Catalnia and the second largest city in Spain, It is located on the Mediterranean coast, with one of Europe’s principal ports, and its airport is the second largest in Spain. Founded as a Roman city, Barcelona is today an important cultural centre and became a major tourist destination after the 1992 World Olimpics. Particularly renowned are architectural works of Antoni Gaudí that have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
